Destiny Kanno And Learn WordPress Evolution

In February 2024, Destiny discussed how through Learn WordPress, the WordPress Training Team teaches users how to utilize, expand and contribute to WordPress in her training sessions.

Did you know that, as Automattic’s Head of Community Education, Destiny Kanno is a vital part of the Learn WordPress platform and the WordPress community at large? Destiny Kanno contributes 40 hours of her week in WordPress Training and Community.

Destiny Fox Kanno is a supporter of social justice, technology, and universal education. She firmly believes that technology can support community ideals and efforts. 

Some of her famous works include: Make WordPress Training 2024 Team Rep, Make WordPress Training 2023 Team Rep, and motivator and advocate for community-based education programs.

Through strategic problem-solving and vision-setting, destiny propels change. In addition to helping relaunch Learn WordPress with the Training Team, she is also developing WordPress Campus Connect and building progressive learning paths for a diverse online community.

Learn WordPress

Learn WordPress is the official free learning platform developed and maintained by the WordPress global community. It is a complete learning space for every possible user of WordPress, from beginners getting on a website for the first time to advanced users looking to improve their skills.

The platform ensures that WordPress education is accessible to everyone, making sure they know how and why use WordPress, no matter their background or technology skills.

On Learn WordPress, users can browse through a variety of resources that cover every aspect of building and managing a website. The resources include tutorials about WordPress themes development and more, courses, workshops, and lesson plans about WordPress plugins and more, designed to promote a learning-friendly yet self-paced experience. 

Lesson plans are intended for educators or users who host meetups for others and want to teach someone about WordPress. Workshops focus on having experts within the community, leading groups through an engaging practice-based, real-life session.

Evolution Of Learn WordPress

Destiny and the Learning team have all been working towards organizing Learn WordPress content into structured Learning Pathways to provide a structure to the learning experience.

Rather than having learners choose tutorials, like ‘WordPress Showcase for Designers’ to design any business website, like a restaurant website, at random, those Learning Pathways would provide a clear guide for moving from beginner to intermediate to expert, based on the learner’s aspiration. 

For instance, if a developer wanted to build in Gutenberg plugin, they would be able to follow a clear step-by-step track, instead of tracking down unrelated tutorials. The objective of the Learning Team is to offer Learn WordPress as a global number 1 resource for learning WordPress. 

To make that a reality, the Learning team will need additional content creators and translators to create tutorials and have them in multiple languages for website courses. 

Volunteering as a content creator can be daunting, and you don’t need to be perfect because it’s a step within a process. You will iterate on your content. Feel free to give it a try.

Within the learning team, you will continue to collaborate with each other so that new tutorials, like What Is A WordPress Multisite, are baked into the experience in a thoughtful way that enhances the experience more globally for everyone.

Destiny And WordPress Community Education 

As a community education manager, Destiny’s goal is to advance the WordPress Training Team’s Learn WordPress platform. This online learning environment provides lesson plans, tutorials, and courses about Introduction to classic themes, which might include learning about WordPress themes for authors, too, to help users become proficient with WordPress.

“Learn WordPress is where we create a video about content from documentation. Suppose I’m looking up how to use full site editing or a block theme. In that case, we’re probably going to get a lot of information from the documentation and then incorporate that into actionable things that someone would use in real life,” says Destiny.

Destiny reiterates that the WordPress community is supportive and welcoming for new folks. She reminds new folks to jump into WordCamps and community groups like BlackPress to meet familiar faces and become comfortable. 

Again, folks are encouraged to ask questions while everyone is participating because no one expects everyone to know everything. Clearly, taking a break or just stepping away is okay. Overall, it’s a safe and social space in which everyone can learn together while they begin to build their confidence and connections.

Roles In The WordPress Training Team

The WordPress Training Team understands the importance of delivering Learn WordPress content in a clear, organized, and approachable manner. Responses from WordCamp EU Contributor Day participants and the individual learner survey have validated this need.

To accommodate learners of various roles and skill levels, this project intends to implement an enhanced Learn WordPress online experience that offers an intuitive, goal-oriented learning environment through tutorials, courses( like Essential Security Plugin Features and Settings, which include learning about WordPress security plugins for your website safety), and lesson plans.

The Training Team is led by a broad collection of individuals. Destiny specifically highlighted the following contributing groups and their roles:

• A content creator creates the courses and lessons.
• The editor checks the content to make sure it is presentable and looks decent.
• The content translator helps the team engage with local communities by localizing the Learn WordPress content.
• A subject matter expert assists others who require assistance with the material.
• The one with an administrative role oversees the team’s operations.

How To Join The WordPress Training Team?

To advance the project, Destiny is seeking additional content producers and translators. “We do have this ambitious goal of creating these learning pathways, but we also need help creating and translating the content,” she says.

To join the adventure, go to the Make WordPress Training Team website and locate the handbook’s Getting Started page. An onboarding video tutorial and instructions for setting up the required accounts, such as Slack, GitHub, and WordPress.org, are provided. Destiny promises that even if it sounds difficult, the tutorial will make it seem simple.

“You’ll see Benjamin Evans in the video, who is the team representative, and he’s made these brilliant videos helping welcome you. It guides you through five pathways to contribute to the Training Team,” says Destiny.

Destiny’s Advice To WordPress Newcomers

Before concluding the podcast, Destiny offered some guidance to those who are new to WordPress or attending a community gathering such as WordCamp.

“Everyone is more friendly than you’re probably anticipating. Don’t hesitate to initiate a conversation or raise your hand during a speaker session. If you have a question, we’re all learning together – no one is a super expert. I think you’ll find that when you just poke a little, that wall will crumble faster than you would expect,” advises Destiny.
