So, what role did Ahmed, Pooja, and Leo play in this release squad?

Leonardus Nugraha

Leo said, “There were four Documentation co-leads for WordPress 6.3. We split the tasks – two of us worked on user documentation, and the other half took care of developer notes. I was in charge of developer notes. While user documentation is like a knowledge base for end users, developer notes are the same but for developers. It was something new for me.”

During the initial Release Candidate, all developer notes ought to be prepared for publication. As a result, Leo worked hardest over the two to three weeks leading up to the first Release Candidate.

Pooja Derashri

Pooja was in charge of the Call for Testing publications as the Test co-lead. The articles provided developers a chance to learn about users and gave anyone a chance to try the most recent version of WordPress. This encouraged the project to have a review and triage culture.

Pooja said, “It’s published on the same day as the Beta version of WordPress 6.3. My fellow Test co-leads and I closely monitored each feature enhancement scheduled for this release.”

Pooja and other Test co-leads kept an eye on Gutenberg plugin versions from earlier releases, went to every bug scrub in the Core team’s Slack channel, read their notes, and looked around 6.3’s GitHub project board.

Ahmed Kabir Chaion

Ahmed then took care of triaging. He supervised the new members of the release squad because he already had experience with release development. As a Core Triage co-lead, Ahmed’s responsibility was to train and mentor those who had never done Triage lead before.

Ahmed said,“We made an effort to cover two time zones because we have four Core Triage co-leads. Thus, there were two co-leads from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and two from Asia Pacific (APAC). This is so that we can support and enhance one another.”

The Problems WordPress 6.3 Contributors Encountered

The most difficult moment for Ahmed was when a significant problem resulted in a fatal bug error in the Beta 1 phase. The bug was so bad that they had to move a couple of dates. Thankfully, more team members were working on WordPress 6.3 than normal, which sped up the process of finding a solution.

Pooja, meanwhile, had to overcome her anxiety while beginning something new. Pooja wasn’t sure how to begin or what to do at the beginning of the release cycle. Fortunately, Brian Alexander, her co-lead, helped her understand her roles and responsibilities and provided her with a lot of guidance during the WordPress 6.3 release process.

The several subtasks involved in writing developer notes also seemed somewhat complicated to Leo. Throughout the development phase, a lot of back-and-forth communications took place.

Thankfully, Leo also experienced a great deal of assistance on his initial assignment as a co-lead for Documentation. He valued how all of the documentation co-leads participated in an Ask Me Anything session led by Milana Cap, a representative of the documentation team. Abha Thakor gave some guidance regarding Core team resources in the meantime.

The Exciting Things For WordPress Release Leads

For Ahmed, it was the moment when people discovered that Ahmed is not a programmer; he liked to watch their responses.

Leo enjoyed learning the steps involved in a WordPress release, from beta testing to release candidates to the actual release date. He gained more knowledge about the next WordPress release by working on developer notes, looking at issues, and pulling requests for bug fixes and new features.

The Favorites

Ahmed, Leo, and Pooja disagreed when asked which improvement they liked best about this release. Ahmed was focused on the enhanced workflow. The effort for the WordPress 6.3 release was less taxing because the release team had more members. He claimed that people collaborated more empathetically.

Pooja and Leo, meanwhile, were thrilled about the features they had been anticipating.

Pooja explained, “My favorites are the Distraction Free Mode, Command Palette, and Style Revisions. These features are so handy. Especially the last one, which lets users easily revise styles.”

“For me, it’s how users can directly create Patterns from the Site Editor. Previously, you’d have to use a plugin, code it from scratch, or create it via the Pattern Directory. Now it’s as easy as creating a Reusable Block,” Leo explained.
